NOTE: Peter frequently quotes form the Septuagint version of the Old Testament.
- Acts 1:20 quoting from Psalms 69:25; 109:8: Peter continued, “This was written in the book of Psalms, where it says, ‘Let his home become desolate, with no one living in it.’ It also says, ‘Let someone else take his position.’
- Acts 2:16-21 quoting from Joel 2:28-32: No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike— and they will prophesy. And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below— blood and fire and clouds of smoke. The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and glorious day of the Lord arrives. But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
- Acts 2:25-28 quoting the Septuagint version of Psalm 16:8-11 & Psalm 110:1: King David said this about him: ‘I see that the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. No wonder my heart is glad, and my tongue shouts his praises! My body rests in hope. For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your Holy One to rot in the grave. You have shown me the way of life, and you will fill me with the joy of your presence.’
- Acts 2:34-35 quoting the Septuagint version of Psalm 110:1: For David himself never ascended into heaven, yet he said ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.”’
- Acts 3:18-26 quoting from Deuteronomy 18:15 & 19 and Leviticus 23:29: But God was fulfilling what all the prophets had foretold about the Messiah—that he must suffer these things. Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away. Then times of refreshment will come from the presence of the Lord, and he will again send you Jesus, your appointed Messiah. For he must remain in heaven until the time for the final restoration of all things, as God promised long ago through his holy prophets. Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from among your own people. Listen carefully to everything he tells you.’ Then Moses said, ‘Anyone who will not listen to that Prophet will be completely cut off from God’s people.’ “Starting with Samuel, every prophet spoke about what is happening today. You are the children of those prophets, and you are included in the covenant God promised to your ancestors. For God said to Abraham, ‘Through your descendants all the families on earth will be blessed.’ When God raised up his servant, Jesus, he sent him first to you people of Israel, to bless you by turning each of you back from your sinful ways.”
- Acts 4:25-26 Peter, John and the other believers quoting from Psalm 2:1-2: you spoke long ago by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant, saying, ‘Why were the nations so angry? Why did they waste their time with futile plans? ‘Why were the nations so angry? Why did they waste their time with futile plans? The kings of the earth prepared for battle; the rulers gathered together against the Lord and against his Messiah.’
- 1 Peter 1:10-11: This salvation was something even the prophets wanted to know more about when they prophesied about this gracious salvation prepared for you. They wondered what time or situation the Spirit of Christ within them was talking about when he told them in advance about Christ’s suffering and his great glory afterward.
- 1 Peter 1:16 quoting from Leviticus 11:44-45; 19:2; 20:7: For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”
- 1 Peter 1:19 referring to Numbers 28:3, etc.: It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.
- 1 Peter 1:24-25 (quoting the Septuagint version of Isaiah 40:6-8: As the Scriptures say, “People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flower fades. But the word of the Lord remains forever.” And that word is the Good News that was preached to you.
- 1 Peter 2:6-8 quoting from Psalm 118:22 and Isaiah 8:14; 28:16: As the Scriptures say, “I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem, chosen for great honor, and anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.” Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him. But for those who reject him, “The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.” And, “He is the stone that makes people stumble, the rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them.
- 1 Peter 2:10 referencing Hosea 1:6,9; 2:23: “Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.”
- 1 Peter 2:22 quoting Isaiah 53:9: He never sinned, nor ever deceived anyone.
- 1 Peter 2:24 quoting Isaiah 53:5: He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed.
- 1 Peter 3:10-12 quoting Psalm 34:12-16: For the Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies. Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it. The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers. But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil.”
- 1 Peter 4:8 quotes from Proverbs 10:12: Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.
- 1 Peter 4:18 quotes from the Septuagint version of Proverbs 11:31: And also, “If the righteous are barely saved, what will happen to godless sinners?”
- 1 Peter 5:5 refes to the Septuagint version of Proverbs 3:34: In the same way, you younger men must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, serve each other in humility, for “God opposes the proud but favors the humble.”
- 2 Peter 2:22 quotes from Proverbs 26:11: They prove the truth of this proverb: “A dog returns to its vomit.” And another says, “A washed pig returns to the mud.”
- 2 Peter 3:15-16: And remember, the Lord’s patience gives people time to be saved. This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him— speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction.
